Song writing - Why people need to pitch songs

How many times have you sat down and started writing a song only to stop and start another one? You say that it wasn't the songwriting style that you're into or you're not that type of songwriter...

I know as I have done it with many ideas until I realised that people have different tastes in music and that maybe I should proceed even when I have that irritable feeling. Recording studio http://www.applebeam.co.uk has seen many many songwriters in and out of their doors and have said;

"Allowyourself to change your mind on how a song should sound when in the studio. Don't be too rigid as songs can become flat and lifeless."

Doing this has allowed me to open up and see new possibilities emerging within this
seemingly unforgiving business known as 'The Music Industry'. I am predominantly into all things rock but have been writing pop songs recently with great success, as I start to realise who could possibly perform them.  In short, my ideals about songwriting have changed.

Also, being a musician in the studio I have observed producers aiming a song or production towards a certain market/artist. This is a great technique and I recommend that you do it if your not already. Be open with yoru songwriting and consider you may be as good, or even better at writing a style of music that perhaps you wouldn't see yourself performing (if you are a performer).

I have also just got into the business of pitching songs myself, something which has been going on for longer than I know.  Basically it's the business of asking someone else to sing your songs. You can write for other people which is what songwriters do
for pretty much every pop act now.

Countless rock acts have also used songwriters to crossover into the 'mainstream' market. Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard and a whole lot of other bands have used songwriters/producers like Desmond Child and John 'mutt' Lange to write countless hits for them. Desmond Child's approach pretty much turned Bon Jovi's and Aerosmith's career around in the 80's.

But, we're in 2009 now and how the hell do we get close to people listening to our songs in the hope of somebody taking them on? How do we take our songwriting to the next level and create a 'business' from it?

Obviously the main source of all communication with the world is the internet now and it has opened up many platforms to get our music heard. Myspace, Imeem, Reverb nation, You tube etc etc. And while these are great, it seems that they too have started to lose popularity with the people with persuasion to get your songs pitched to their acts.

There are now ways of getting your songs listened to by the infamous A&R people at the record/publishing companies via the internet. Those come in the form of sites like 'Taxi'- who send you leads and Song pitch PRO which bring industry A&R to your music

Songwriting is a balancing act between personal skill, ego and discipline! In other words, become great at your craft, dont let your ego interfear with commercial songwriting descisions, and keep on pitching via any medium you can to get your music heard.

What do you think of Kanye West's new songs?

I personally think he's getting WAY too full of himself, but atleast he knows he has a big ego. What do you think?

I think he has earned the right to think whatever he pleases.
No one can please everyone, all the time.
I say please God, then yourself,
f-- the rest of this opinionated world.
