Chet Baker Sings

Does anyone hate jazz vocalists as much as I do?
Does anyone else's experience get wrecked when they're trying to listen to some swingin' jazz and then some girl who can't even sing that well takes lead place over the saxophone or trumpet? I got a Chet Baker album the other day started out instrumental, as all jazz should be then a couple of songs in he started singing and I was like damn what's this cat up to? You know what I mean? Sax or Trumpet should always take the lead in jazz, never vocalists.
Oh I know the feeling. The instruments are designed for this type of music, and they very soulfully carry it out. When vocals are thrown in, in my opinion, it ruins the whole thing. I hate listening to a vocalist for anything (With the exception of Moondance by Michael Buble. He was born to sing that song ![]()
But yes, I do have the same feeling, which is why I refuse to play the bass in any song that has a vocalist. It ruins it for me!

Best Of: Chet Baker Sings $7.32 Once Chet Baker arrived in California from his native Oklahoma, his career exploded. After landing gigs with Charlie Parker and Gerry Mulligan, Baker soon found himself a solo star and bandleader. Not long after that, he also found himself whispering love songs into a microphone. Baker was not gifted with the most robust voice of the day. Indeed, listening to pure singers like Nat "King" Cole or J... |

Sings $5.27 Recorded with pianist Russ Freeman's ensemble in 1954 and 1956, this is the archetypal Baker release, and the first one to get if you're testing the waters. Baker sings standards (including "My Funny Valentine," of course) as if stepping out of an androgynous dream, although it would take another 20 years of hard living for his voice to take on otherworldly qualities. Relaxed West Coast swing such... |

Sings [Vinyl] $16.61 Heavyweight 180gm vinyl LP pressing of this album from the Jazz great. Chet Baker Sings was a revelation at the time and won Baker new fame and a new audience, which was less familiar with Jazz than with Pop music. The reasons are quite clear: Chet's voice is tender and beautiful, and at the same time his phrasing always swings and surprises. Initially issued as a ten inch Long Play containing e... |
